Leadership



Dr. Ehsan Shirzaei Sani is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of GIANT BioSystems.<br><br>Ehsan is currently an Assistant Professor in the UCF Department of Materials Science and Engineering. He specializes in advanced multifunctional and multimodal biomaterials for human/machine interfaces and regenerative medicine, as well as wearable/implantable technologies for theragnostic applications.<br><br>Dr. Sani's academic journey began with a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Sistan and Baluchestan (Zahedan, Iran), followed by a master's degree in chemical engineering and Polymer Science from Sharif University of Technology (Tehran, Iran). He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2020, where his research was focused on the development of multifunctional hydrogel-based bioadhesive platforms for suture less sealing and repair of soft and hard tissues. He then joined the Department of Medical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) as a postdoctoral fellow (2020-2023) to work on advanced wearable and implantable devices for human health monitoring.<br><br>Dr. Sani is the author/co-author of over 40 research articles, one book chapter and holds five US patents. He has received several awards, including Best Poster Presentation Award in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting 2018, Young Investigator Award from the Iranian American Medical Association (IAMA) 2018, Best Poster Presentation Award at the PhD Research Expo Recap 2018, and Best Poster Presentation Award at the Materials Research Society (MRS) Conference 2017.<br><br><br>

Dr. Morteza Azizi is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of GIANT BioSystems Inc.. <br><br> Morteza earned his PhD in Food Science from Cornell University in 2020. His main focus was on using microsystems and micromachines for food pathogen detection and studying their antimicrobial resistance patterns. He published multiple articles in prestigious journals and holds multiple US patents. <br><br> Dr. Azizi also performed a research fellow program (won NIH T32 fellowship program) at Harvard Medical School and Center for Systems Biology of Massachusetts General Hospital (2020-2022) focusing on cervical cancer-derived Human Papillomavirus detection and cancer-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) profiling via engineering the microsystems.<br><br><br>

Canran Wang is co-founder and Chief Operation Officer of GIANT BioSystems. <br><br> Canran received her bachelor's degree with highest honor from Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, with one year exchange experience at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where her research focused organ-on-a-chip and tissue engineering. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in medical engineering at California Institute of Technology with the supervision of Prof. Wei Gao after obtaining a master's degree in 2023. She is working on developing wearable bioelectronics for chronic wound healing. She has over 20 publications in the biomedical field. <br><br> Before graduate school, Canran had full time working experience at BFC Group, a Chinese healthcare investment bank, where she led and participated in over $80 M fundraising and licensing deals for local biopharma and biotech startups. She also serves as Executive Committee member at Sino-American Pharmaceutical Association (SAPA-CT) and VP at operation team in Nucleate Los Angeles chapter. Canran won 1st palace Chinese-American Engineers and Scientists Association of Southern California award in 2023.<br><br><br>

Samuel Solomon is the Chief Strategy Officer of GIANT BioSystems. <br><br> Samuel received his Bachelor of Science in chemistry-biology and physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2020) as well as a certificate in living machines for his work in developing a gut-on-a-chip that models the way drugs and microbes interact inside the digestive track. At the California Institute of Technology in 2023, Samuel received his master's in medical engineering. Currently, he is pursuing his doctorate in medical and electrical engineering under the supervision of Dr. Wei Gao at the California Institute of Technology, where he is developing an autonomous wearable platform that specializes in personalized anxiety therapy. He is a National Science Foundation graduate research fellow and a Hertz fellowship finalist. <br><br> Before joining GIANT BioSystems, Samuel helped lead 4 independent startups. He was an MIT 100K pitch finalist, 1st place finisher in the BetterMIT hackathon, and a 2nd place finisher in the international Incube competition at ETH Zurich.<br><br><br>

Dino Di Carlo is a world-renowned professor of Bioengineering at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), a serial entrepreneur, and an inventor. <br><br>He serves in academic leadership roles as the Vice Chair of the bioengineering department and Deputy Director of a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center. He was honored at the White House with the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor bestowed on young scientists and engineers by the US government. <br><br>Dr. Di Carlo is also an expert in intellectual property prosecution and litigation. He is an inventor on >50 issued patents in the U.S. and across the world and has served as an expert witness in litigation and IPRs. He also has served in business leadership roles. He co-founded 7 startup companies in life science diagnostic, medical device, and pharmaceutical industries over the last 10 years and continues to serve on the board of directors of many of these companies. As an example, he is a co-founder and director at Cytovale, a 50+ person company commercializing a sepsis diagnostic test for rapid triage in the emergency department (raised over $130M funding). <br><br>He has also served as a Scientific Advisor to several life sciences companies, including Cue Health (NASDAQ: HLTH) and Omega Biosciences, which was acquired by Becton Dickinson in 2017.
